Square Enix introduces Pure Storage’s all-flash solution to improve user experience in its VDI environment
Tokyo, Japan – May 17, 2021 — Pure Storage (NYSE: PSTG), the IT pioneer that delivers storage as-a-service in a multi-cloud world, announced that Square Enix, which runs many popular titles of MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games), has introduced Pure’s modern data technology to improve their environment of game development and operational efficiency.
Pure’s technology was especially critical during the current environment as user numbers increased and enabled Square Enix’s engineers to ensure smooth operations of the platform. The company’s games developers were also able to continue their development work while working from home.
Pure’s storage arrays are deployed in Square Enix’s VDI (virtual desktop interface) platform. The VDI platform was put in place to enable the company’s engineers to continue their work at home. In particular, latency was top of mind for Square Enix and Pure surpassed their expectations.
Square Enix’s previous experience with legacy storage was less than desirable and working with Pure has changed their perception of the importance of storage in the smooth operations of a complex IT deployment like VDI. Not only were Pure’s solutions installed in half the time of their previous storage products but the performance levels dramatically improved.
“With deduplication and data compression, you never know how effective a vendor’s products will be until we put it into operation. In our experience, no product performed as claimed by the vendor. With Pure’s products, we would have been happy with 4X compression but when we tested their product, we actually achieved 6X compression.”

Square Enix has since expanded their use of Pure in their infrastructure and with Pure’s Evergreen™ support model, they’ve been able to non-disruptively upgrade their arrays to the latest versions at no additional cost.
“Digital transformation is a priority for organizations but it also creates challenges especially around data management. Pure’s modern data technologies help companies like Square Enix build stable and high performing IT infrastructure that is flexible and agile to meet any future demands,” said Yoshiyuki Tanaka, President, Pure Storage Japan.
